Four Tips for Photographing a Busy Toddler

Toddlers are busy, to say the least! Their newfound skill of walking has them exploring their world as much and as quickly as possible, and it’s exhausting to try and keep up! Are you worried about getting them to cooperate for a photograph? I’ve got some great news, it can be a challenge, but it’s not impossible. Here are four tips for photographing a busy toddler.

Schedule a Morning Session

Set them up for success – if possible schedule your session for the morning, well before nap time is supposed to happen.  If you can’t schedule it for the morning then schedule it for a little after their nap.  A well-rested toddler will be more agreeable for photos.

Bring Snacks

Bring food, snacks, and water – I know I get a little hangry sometimes and just need a little snacky snack.  So bring their favorite snack that will not stain their clothes or mouth. Cheerios and goldfish are two good options for that little treat.

Make it a game

Manage your expectations – babies and toddlers do things their own thing, right?!  I have an approach to photography that is more of a game.  This little guy ran all over the house, played with a firetruck, played with a baseball, explored behind my backdrop, and went in and out of a cabinet about 100 times (I’m not even joking!). He was having fun exploring his world.

Take a break

If all else fails… take a break… let them be free for a moment and don’t force it.
